Befriending Your Body

Befriending your body is a 10-week virtual group for those experiencing chronic illness and/or chronic pain. The group is appropriate for individuals aged 18+ who have a chronic bodily experience or diagnosis causing them distress.

The group will focus on the psychological impact of experiencing chronic bodily distress, exploring how pain and illness affect your thoughts and feelings. The group will create space to:

  • Learn and practice skills that have been designed to help with the experience of physical distress.

  • Understand the deeper meaning of your pain and illness.

  • Explore how illness and pain impact self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, sense of identity, mood and body image.

  • Connect with peers who experience similar challenges

  • Create a balance between adequately tending to your medical needs and engaging fully in life

The group is dynamic and interactive, incorporating embodied therapy techniques, mindfulness skills, and open discussion. My hope is that inviting our bodies into the room will allow us to not only “talk” but also “be” with our bodily experiences - that way together we can support each other in “re-inhabiting” our bodies.

The group creator and leader, Dr. Aleksandra Rayska, is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and a trained Dance/Movement Therapist with over 15 years of clinical experience of bringing mind and body into the clinical space.
