Discernment Counseling
Are you and your partner unsure whether to stay together or separate? Is one of you ready to end the relationship while the other wants to work on it? When couples are on different pages about the future of their relationship, Discernment Counseling can offer a path forward.
Discernment Counseling is a short-term, structured process (usually 1–5 sessions) designed for couples where at least one partner is considering divorce or separation. Unlike traditional couples therapy, which focuses on improving the relationship, the goal of Discernment Counseling is to gain confidence and clarity in decision making by gaining a deeper understanding of what went wrong in the relationship and each partner’s contributions.
Each session includes time together and one-on-one conversations with the therapist, allowing space for honest reflection without pressure to commit to repairing the relationship. The focus is on understanding how the relationship got to this point and whether change feels possible.
This approach is especially helpful when:
One partner is “leaning out” while the other is “leaning in”
You feel stuck in limbo and need clarity
Past couples therapy didn’t help because your goals were misaligned
You want to avoid making a rushed or regret-filled decision
At Therapists of New York, our trained Discernment Counselors create a respectful, nonjudgmental space where each partner’s experience is honored. Whether you ultimately choose to rebuild your relationship or part ways, the goal is to support thoughtful, intentional decision-making.
If you’re feeling stuck and uncertain, Discernment Counseling can help you move forward with clarity and confidence. Reach out to schedule a consultation with a TNY Discernment Counselor today.
