Mind-Body Connection

Our thoughts, emotions, and physical experiences are deeply interconnected. Many people notice that stress, anxiety, trauma, or unresolved emotional experiences show up in the body through pain, fatigue, tension, digestive issues, or other physical symptoms. While this connection is widely understood, it is often oversimplified or dismissed as “all in your head,” leaving people feeling invalidated, confused, or caught between medical and mental health providers without clear answers.

At Therapists of New York, we offer care that honors the full mind–body connection. Rather than separating physical symptoms from emotional experience, our approach recognizes that the body can hold and communicate important information about stress, trauma, and unmet needs. Mind–body and somatic therapy help you build awareness of how your nervous system, emotions, and physical sensations interact, supporting greater clarity, regulation, and self-understanding.

Mind–body therapy can be especially helpful when symptoms are complex, unexplained, or persist despite medical care. By integrating attention to both psychological and bodily experiences, therapy can support coping with uncertainty, reduce distress, and restore a sense of safety and connection within your body.

In mind–body therapy, you may work on:

• Developing a deeper understanding of your relationship with your body

• Building skills for nervous system regulation and emotional grounding

• Exploring the meaning behind physical symptoms or chronic pain

• Addressing body image concerns or disconnection from the body

• Integrating physical experiences, such as illness or injury, into your sense of self

• Coping with medical uncertainty, diagnosis, or recovery

• Reconnecting with bodily cues as sources of information rather than threat

Some of the concerns our Mind-Body and Somatic therapists treat include:

• Anxiety with physical symptoms

• Chronic pain and pain amplification

• Chronic illness and medical trauma

• Autoimmune conditions

• Post-surgical or injury recovery

• Cancer and cancer survivorship

• Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome
(ME/CFS), and POTS

• Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and digestive distress

• Insomnia and disrupted sleep

• Long COVID and post-viral fatigue

• Migraines, tension headaches, dizziness, and balance concerns

• Pelvic pain and sexual pain disorders

• Trauma and stress held in the body

Mind–body therapy invites your body into the therapeutic space and treats it as an essential part of your story, not something to override or ignore. With support, it is possible to develop a more trusting relationship with your body and move toward greater ease and understanding in your lived experience.
