Letters for Gender-Affirming Procedures
We offer assessments to provide letters of support for gender-affirming surgeries. This process typically involves 1 to 4 sessions (45–60 minutes each) focused on:
• Your goals and expectations for surgery
• Any questions or concerns about the surgical or recovery process
• Relevant aspects of your identity, history, and support system
• Gathering the information needed for a diagnosis of gender dysphoria or gender incongruence, as required
Access to gender-affirming medical care is essential for many trans and non-binary (TGNB) individuals. Insurance companies and surgeons often require a letter of support from a licensed mental health provider. Our role is to advocate for TGNB clients and ensure that accessing care is as respectful and streamlined as possible. Therapy offers a space to understand what is fueling your stress, where your limits are being stretched, and how to make choices that align with your well-being instead of working against it. You do not need to sacrifice your ambition to feel grounded, energized, and balanced. With support, it is possible to reconnect with your values, set boundaries confidently, and build a life that honors both your goals and your health.
You do not need to be in ongoing therapy at Therapists of New York to receive a letter assessment, although we do offer ongoing gender-affirming therapy for clients seeking longer-term support. At this time, we can conduct assessments for adults (18+) residing in New York. If you need a provider in another state, we recommend GALAP’s directory for affirming clinicians.
