DBT Skills Coaching

DBT Skills Coaching provides focused, short-term support for learning and applying Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills to specific challenges in your life.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is an evidence-based approach that helps people develop practical tools for managing emotions, reducing stress, improving relationships, and responding more effectively to difficult situations.

In DBT coaching sessions, you work with a clinician to apply these skills to situations you are currently navigating. Sessions are collaborative and practical, with an emphasis on strategies you can use in everyday life.

Many people choose DBT coaching when they want targeted, structured support around a specific issue rather than ongoing therapy or group treatment.

Who DBT Skills Coaching Is For - DBT Skills Coaching can be helpful for people who want to:

  • Manage intense emotions or stress

  • Improve communication and boundaries

  • Navigate difficult relationships or workplace challenges

  • Reduce reactive or impulsive behaviors

  • Strengthen coping skills and emotional regulation

  • Build practical tools for handling everyday stressors

This format can also be especially helpful for people who have already completed a DBT skills group and would like:

• A refresher on core DBT skills

• Help applying the skills to a current situation

• More individualized support practicing DBT strategies

For many clients, DBT coaching provides a structured way to reinforce and deepen DBT skills over time.

Therapists of New York also offers a DBT Skills Group for people who want to learn these skills in a structured group setting. Some clients combine DBT coaching with our DBT Skills Group to reinforce the skills they are learning and continue practicing them in a structured setting.

What to Expect

DBT Skills Coaching at Therapists of New York is typically:

• Short-term (often 6–12 sessions)

• Goal-focused

• Skills-based and practical

At the start of coaching, you and your therapist will identify the specific challenge or goal you want to work on. Sessions focus on learning DBT skills and applying them to that area.

Your therapist will help you practice new strategies, apply them as situations arise in your daily life, and refine the skills over time so they become easier to use when you need them.
