What to Expect
This group meets weekly in a classroom-style format and emphasizes learning and applying skills in a supportive environment. Participants receive guided instruction, engage in weekly practice, and are encouraged to use the tools between sessions to build mastery.
The full curriculum is covered over four core DBT modules:
Mindfulness: Learn to stay present, reduce judgment, and increase control over thoughts and behaviors. This module forms the foundation for all other DBT skills.
Emotion Regulation: Build tools to better understand, manage, and respond to your emotions without being overwhelmed by them.
Distress Tolerance: Develop strategies to navigate crises and intense emotions without resorting to harmful behaviors.
Interpersonal Effectiveness: Strengthen your communication skills, learn to set boundaries, assert your needs, and improve your relationships.
Our DBT group is ideal for individuals who:
Struggle with intense or unpredictable emotions
Experience emotional outbursts, numbing, or dissociation
Engage in impulsive behaviors (e.g., substance use, self-harm, overspending)
Find it difficult to maintain healthy relationships
Are seeking practical, evidence-based coping strategies
While this group is not focused on in-depth processing of past experiences, participants are encouraged to reflect on how the skills relate to their current challenges. The emphasis is on building practical tools to support emotional regulation and more effective coping. Between sessions, members are encouraged to practice the skills through home assignments, which help strengthen confidence and address any barriers to applying the skills.
By the end of the group, members leave with a comprehensive set of tools, improved emotional regulation, and a binder full of DBT materials to use in their daily lives.
We offer both in-person and virtual groups. Groups are led by Dr. Joey Sergi and Dr. Paul LaFreniere, both of whom have extensive training and experience facilitating DBT skills groups.
